God Works in Mysterious ways
I came across the following story on the internet. I don't know who the author is, nor do I know if it is actually a true story. What touched me is the message and the added synchronicity of what happened after I shared this story with a friend. This in my opinion gave it an exclamation mark!
The title of the story is "God works in Mysterious Ways" ...
Isn't it amazing how God works in our lives! On a Saturday night several weeks ago, this pastor was working late, and decided to call his wife before he left for home. It was about 10:00PM, but his wife didn't answer the phone. The pastor let the phone ring many times. He thought it was odd that she didn't answer, but decided to wrap up a few things and try again in a few minutes. When he tried again she answered right away. He asked her why she hadn't answered before, and she said that it hadn't rung at their house. They brushed it off as a fluke and went on their merry ways.
The following Monday, the pastor received a call at the church office, which was the phone that he'd used that Saturday night. The man that he spoke with wanted to know why he'd called on Saturday night. The pastor couldn't figure out what the man was talking about. Then the man said, "It rang and rang, but I didn't answer." The pastor remembered the mishap and apologized for disturbing him, explaining that he'd intended to call his wife.
The man said, "That's, OK. Let me tell you my story.
You see, I was planning to commit suicide on Saturday night, but before I did, I prayed, 'God if you're there, and you don't want me to do this, give me a sign now.' At that point my phone started to ring. I looked at the caller ID, and it said, 'Almighty God'. I was afraid to answer!" The reason why it showed on the man's caller ID that the call came from "Almighty God" is because the church that the pastor attends is called ...
Almighty God Tabernacle!!
*I was on the road teaching several seminars and had a few minutes to relax and enjoy a visit with my friend. I was also expecting a phone call from one of my clients. I shared the above story with her. At the precise moment I completed the story the phone rang. Thinking it was my client I noticed on the call display - 'Mother Mary calling'. It turned out the name of the school her daughter attends is the 'Mother Mary' school. 'Divine Timing!'
The term 'SYNCHRONICITY' was coined by Carl Jung to denote 'meaningful coincidences'.
"Events bound by synchronicity are connected by similarity, by meaning, by resonance, rather than by causality. Synchronicity is an acausal connecting principle. Since it goes beyond causation, it goes beyond time and space, and is not limited by such relations." ~ Carl Jung
According to the World Book Dictionary, "'INTUITION' is the immediate perception of understanding of truths, facts or events without reasoning. In other words it is a 'knowing'."
"It is the non-rational instinctive knowing that provides you with inner guidance, greater intelligence and wisdom through heart consciousness." ~ Hannelore
Albert Einstein was quoted as saying: "The only real valuable thing is intuition."
He also stated: "There is no logical way to the discovery of these elemental laws. There is only the way of intuition, which is helped by a feeling for the order lying behind the appearance."
When I contemplate what synchronicity is, and what or how it relates to intuition, I view them this way:
I believe intuition is the inner voice of wisdom. And synchronicities are the outer manifestations – the observable events.
Synchronicity is often a validation of our intuition. It acts like a guide, a way shower that our intuition deciphers. Often synchronicities present themselves in metaphors.
Intuition plays an important role in our interpretation of the event. Just as a Shaman or "seer" is trained to recognize the messages the Cosmic intelligence is presenting experiences to us through the metaphors of synchronicities.
A Shaman is one who relies on their sixth sense or intuition, recognizing the signs as insights to guide them on their journey. They have learned to develop these skills just as we can learn to train ourselves to be consciously aware of the synchronicities in our lives. In so doing, we enhance our intuition.
The voice of intuition is clear. It is not muddled with fear, doubt or indecision which is rooted in the ego mind. When one learns to distinguish the voice of intuition from false voices of the ego, they are guided to recognize synchronous events in their lives.
The intellect tends to dismiss a meaningful coincidence of synchronous event. It can cloud the Divine Intention and synchronous message. With a developed intuition, the inner voice of wisdom not only recognizes but will match the resonance, immediately discerning the synchronous expression.
Consider another quote from Albert Einstein:
"The intellect has little to do on the road to discovery. There comes a leap in consciousness, call it Intuition or what you will, the solution comes to you and you don't know how or why."
Could the how or why be the inner voice of intuition that recognizes synchronicity? When we are in touch with our intuition we are more consciously aware of synchronous events. When we intentionally open to the signs given through synchronicities, we become more consciously in tune with our intuition.
There are meaningful coincidences that seem unusual. You might get bumped from a plane and on the next flight, meet the love of your life. Or you get to the theatre the night of the performance to buy a ticket to a Broadway show and there's someone outside who has one to give away because his friend couldn't come. He gifts it to you. In his book, 'The Celestine Prophecy,' James Redfield defines synchronicities as signs, called "insights." We don't always understand why our paths cross with another, and it may be we are meant to connect for an important reason. That reason may not present itself right away: but it will unfold when the time is right.
The following is one of my personal examples:
As an ordained Interfaith Minister, I am registered with the city of New York and can legally perform marriage ceremonies throughout the U.S. As there is no 'Interfaith' church established in Canada, I must have a marriage commissioner present at the ceremony. For years I worked with Pamela, a marriage commissioner, who became a dear friend. Unfortunately, Pamela developed breast cancer, had surgery and moved from our location. I was curious to know how she was doing and also welcomed the opportunity to work together once again. We lost touch with each other and I spent years looking for her but to no avail.
My life was filled with changes. These included several moves, a six-month world tour followed by relocation to Vancouver. It was early December; I just settled into my new home and was preparing for Xmas. I planned to purchase a one-year membership at the nearby senior center for my mother. My son's wife worked at the fitness center which was located in the same building.
I decided to save myself a trip and phoned my son to get Val's work number and have her pick up the pass for me. He gave me a number and said, "I think this is the number, but if not, call me back." I phoned the number and a woman answered. It didn't sound like my daughter-in-law, so I asked if Val was there. The voice at the other end said, "No, I think you have the wrong number, but is this Hannelore?" Surprised, I replied, "Yes." To which she said, "This is Pamela."
Now, this would be amazing in itself, but there is more. I said, "Oh my God! Pamela! Are you working at the fitness center?" To which she replied, "No, this is my home number, and not only that, I have been out of the country and just returned late yesterday afternoon. While shopping for a few groceries, I came across one of your articles with your contact information in one of the magazines and I was going to give you a call this morning. "
We have since resumed our friendship and happily do Marriage Ceremonies together once again. We were meant to be together for a reason and we were brought together again. If I had not made the decision to phone for the yearly pass at the senior center, the Universe still had a back-up plan! Pamela had seen my ad in the magazine.
(I am also happy to report that Pamela shared a remarkable Whale story for the world to read in my upcoming book, 'Dolphins, Whales & Magical Tails'.)
This is synchronicity. This is the way the Universe works. This is the way life works when we get ourselves out of the way and allow it to shower us with its good – when we live in the realm of the sacred "Yes!"
These synchronistic happenings tend to occur unexpectedly. But there are also times when we have a feeling that something is about to happen – something good or something bad – a premonition – E.S.P. – a sixth sense. And then it does. This is intuition at work. Everyone has it to a degree – but some practice it and become incredibly proficient at using it.
The Universe presents to us situations and experiences that seem magical. Pragmatic people might call them a coincidence. But in the spiritual realm, events, people and circumstances line up in sync with one another – 'synchronistically' - to present magnificent results.
Yet, much of the human race tends to walk around with blinders on – not unlike the ones that are placed on horses to block their peripheral vision. We ask but we don't see. Sometimes we may not be ready, or we don't like what we hear or what we might be guided to do. All the wisdom of the Universe is indwelling in each of us and often times when it wants to come to the surface, we feel a sense of unease.
We receive signs. Sometimes we even ask for them, but when they come, we overlook them completely. Other times, they seem too small and insignificant. We want B-I-G signs. Until we are actually hit over the head with them we brush them off and do not take them seriously. It's as if they're waving at us and shouting, "Over here, over here", but we are blind to them and keep looking past, still asking 'What am I meant to do?" Our ego selves drive us in one direction, while the Universe is directing us in another.
Sometimes we meet an individual who is the catalyst to force us to step into our Divine essence and purpose. We don't necessarily recognize them as such – but eventually, we can look back at the moment we met – and we can see the shift we made because they entered our lives.
Deepak Chopra writes about 'SynchroDestiny.' He defines this as "Coincidence containing purpose that has direction and intention. For example, someone could be on a path to becoming an actor or musician and reaches some degree of fame. Someone asks him to use his status as a celebrity to help bring in funds to feed starving children in Somalia. His career takes on new meaning. The joining of his talent with purpose and intention may have seemed a coincidence – but it's as if it were destined to be. It is 'SynchroDestiny'."
The following is my personal example of 'SynchroDestiny' in action:
Many years prior to attending a week long seminar in Maui, I met a man at an event in Mount Shasta. He gave me his card which I tucked away and forgot about. A few days before my flight to Maui, I remembered our connection with each other, looked for his card but could not find it. The next day, I received a phone call and guess who! He just happened to come across my card and felt the impulse to call.
What I find even more fascinating is how interwoven the many subsequent synchronicities were. Directly after the completion of my retreat and while still in Maui, I had a remarkable one-on-one and eye to eye connection with non-captive dolphins. It was so incredibly powerful and heart opening, that I knew I wanted to share this experience with others. I decided to create my 'Communing with Dolphins' retreats. I wanted to find the perfect place, not only right at the ocean, but also where it would be safe for me to guide the participants in and out of the water. It also had to be precisely where the dolphins frequently visit. I was staying with the man I met in Shasta and shared my plans with him. It just so happened that his ex partner catered at a house in that exact place – but on another island. This is now where I offer my retreats and have done so for the past 10 years.
Was it a coincidence to meet someone briefly, five years earlier, to then think of each other at the same time, and through that connection to be led to the magical facility where I offer Dolphin retreats? At the time of our first meeting this was not even in my conscious awareness. Was it a mere coincidence? Or was it series of synchronistic events that led me to a part of my Destiny to work with Dolphins?
We experience synchronicity all the time. We become more consciously aware of them when we allow ourselves to tune into our intuitive nature, rather than trying to control things with our ego minds. The most common is probably when we pick up the phone to make a call, only to have the person we are calling on the other end of the line without the phone even ringing. They may have just picked up the phone to call us.
We may be en-route to an appointment and delayed by a sequence of red lights. Suddenly, we pass an accident that happened mere moments before. The delay may have kept us from being involved in the incident.
We can be miles from home and make the decision to walk down a particular street – and we run into an old acquaintance. Sometimes we connect with the same individual several times in a day – at a store, in a bank line up, in the car next to us at a traffic light or in a restaurant.
We tend to dismiss these things as coincidence. But when we do, we are missing out on some of life's greatest gifts.
It's important that we don't dismiss what we are seeing. That's when it's time to go within – to tune in to our inner wisdom. It is time to ask, "What does this mean?" Why is this person showing up in my life? Why am I feeling what I'm feeling? Why is this making me uncomfortable – or excited – or expectant? What IS this I'm feeling?
When presented with different choices, it's wise to state an intention and ask for help with the decision. Synchronicity happens in many different circumstances. One of my students shared this story with me.
"Before you and I met, I came across your brochure and was considering whether to register for your intuition program. I was having difficulty making the decision and had to make up my mind as the program was to begin in a another week. I asked my guides to help me by giving me some kind of sign. Around that time, I attended an event where there were hundreds of people. During intermission I was in a long lineup and directly in front of me was a group of women. I kept hearing your name mentioned and they were discussing the class and how it changed their lives. They had all "coincidently" met in the line and all completed your intuition training. Needless to say, it was a very clear sign for me to make the decision to register."
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was quoted as saying: "The moment one definitely commits oneself, providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. Unforeseen incidents, meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would come his way."
Often we do not understand why certain things happen in our lives. Why we are guided to certain places or to meet certain individuals. But, the more we open up to allow for these possibilities, and take that extra moment to tune into our inner voices to ask why, we may be surprised at the answers that come forth. There are many beings that are not of this physical realm that are here to support us. But in order to receive help, we need to ask. We must allow help to come to us. It may not always come from our own species but could come from an animal, a bird or from nature in some way.
There will be times the signs will seem very insignificant but they are waiting patiently to be noticed. Others will seem to shout at us, becoming blatantly obvious! Over the years, I learned to pay close attention to these signs. I see them as intuitive nudges. These may be significant enough to save a life; be it our own or that of someone we love.
Paying attention to seemingly insignificant signs resulted in a chain of events that placed me exactly where I needed to be for my mother. I had caught an earlier flight than originally planned. Once we landed, and at the precise moment I phoned her to let her know I arrived, she had a stroke as we were speaking. I was able to contact my brother who rushed to get her to the hospital in time to save her life.
"Chance favors the prepared mind." Louis Pasteur
Synchronicities can also present themselves as validations. Just the other day, I was writing about my deceased father and how he still communicates to us from the other side. At precisely the moment I completed my story, an eagle swooped right in front of my window not more than 20 feet away.
Eagles have been powerful signs for me. Part of my journey and passion is to embrace the ways of the First Nations people. I have been adopted into the Blackfoot Nation which resides in southern Alberta. My Blackfoot name is 'Natoominaki' (Sacred Wings Woman). I am a 'Sundancer' and a pipe carrier. At the precise moment during the ceremony when I received my pipe, two eagles circled directly above our heads. This was an enormous blessing and validation of this part of my path.
We are given many signs by nature and its blessed beings. When we take the time to observe and take notice, there are many messages. I have learned that when crows swoop in front of my windshield while driving, I am to slow down. This happened one day when my son was driving and we were well into the country, on a quiet road, with very little traffic. A crow swooped down at the windshield and, as was my habit, I checked the speedometer to see how fast my son was driving. He was about 10 clicks over the speed limit. I decided we would be okay so I didn't say anything. Just then another crow flew down and almost hit the windshield. I turned to my son and said, "Maybe you should slow down a bit." He automatically took his foot off the gas and looked at me surprised. "Why?" he asked. Just as we turned the next corner there was a radar trap - right there in the middle of nowhere! He looked at me and asked, "How did you know?!" I just smiled and expressed a silent thank you to the crows.
There are infinite examples of synchronicities at work in our daily lives; especially during times of transformation. At times of struggle, seemingly out of nowhere, we will hear or read the very words of comfort needed to help us move through grief with ease and grace. They also help inspire us and awaken our potential.
We are all on our quest for purpose, harmony, balance, love, joy and peace. Insights are given to us through gentle nudges and the inner voice of our intuition. As we tune into that voice and place our conscious awareness on the synchronicities that occur in our daily lives, we will notice the pattern and the path that leads us to where we are meant to be. We may very well be guided to our 'SynchroDestiny'. In turn, the noticing escalates our intuitive skills.
I cannot sufficiently emphasize the value of the following exercise! If you are diligent and keep recording your synchronicities over several months, no matter how insignificant they may seem, you will notice when reviewing your entries, that a pattern emerges. You may even find an answer to a newly formed question; an answer to something that may not have been in your consciousness when you began to journal but has been patiently waiting to be noticed. If you are keeping a daily reflection journal/diary, where you write your thoughts and ponderings, you may find when comparing your daily journal and your synchronicity journal there is a story that unfolds and is guiding you on your path.
An offered suggestion:
To practice using your intuition to recognize a synchronicity, relax go into a meditative state. With a specific question and intention at hand, surrender and place your awareness on any outer manifestations of meaningful metaphors that may then express themselves and potentially validate your intuitive nudge.
Rather than brushing off seemingly small "coincidences, I suggest you record them in a 'synchronicity' journal. Use a small booklet that will fit in your purse or pocket and keep it with you at all times. Set your intention to make a note of any coincidence or anything unusual that happens during the day and record as many as you notice. Your noticing is your acknowledgement, and in doing so you have heightened your awareness. It is not that you are walking around saying to yourself, "Where are my synchronicities?" Instead; imagine the blinders are removed from your eyes and be open to seeing and hearing all that is around you.
You will get your messages in some of the most unlikely places. Let's say you are wondering if you should enter the healing field and if so, what should you study? You find yourself waiting in a line and you overhear someone mention 'Reiki'. You may not know very much about Reiki but you know that it has to do with healing in some way. You jot this in your notebook. The following day you may be in a Doctor's office and you pick up a pamphlet that discusses Reiki. Again, you make a note of this. Meanwhile, there are many other very small coincidences that you might normally brush off, and then you may be in a conversation with someone who just completed her Reiki training.
"Synchronistic events offer us perceptions that may be useful in our psychological and spiritual growth and may reveal to us, through intuitive knowledge, that our lives have meaning." ~ Jean Shinoda Bolen, MD, The Tao of Psychology
These little cosmic flags, that we call coincidence, are gentle taps on the shoulder from Spirit inviting us to 'pay attention'. When we pay attention and place our awareness on what seem to be random coincidences, we may learn to welcome with a smile the way the Universe Divinely orchestrates our destined path.
