Several months ago, I watched a movie made in 1950 about an aging starlet. The movie, ‘Sunset Boulevard’ starred Gloria Swanson, who played the aging starlet and William Holden, her young male ‘gigolo’ companion. Being ‘past her prime’ she was thrilled when asked to star in a movie. In reality, they did not want her; they used that as a pretext as they wanted to access the antique and rare vehicle she had.
As in many movies depicting that era, the acting was dramatic and over the top as she desperately tried to make herself look younger. References were made throughout the movie about how very old she was and well beyond anything desirable as a woman. At one point in the movie her paid gigolo says to her ‘Get over it; you have got to face the fact you are 50 years old now.”
“WHAT!!!” I just about fell off my chair! Probably had something to do with the fact I was well over 50 and certainly did not see myself in this light!
